The "Sunshine Summit" was held on June 2nd, 2006 with our annual Golf Outing on Saturday June 3rd. Both were big successes!

Pictures can be viewed by clicking here

The 2006 Sunshine Summit featured a full day of NonStop education and networking for end users, and third party vendor partners. HP experts were on hand to discuss the future of NonStop and all other HP product lines. The following excellent presentations were given:

ACI Vendor Presentation
Simple, Secure SOA for HP NonStop Applications
Presented by Andrew Price, Director, Product Management
This presentation showed how ACI Worldwide's Secure SOA Enabler can be used to quickly and easily allow HP NonStop applications to participate in enterprise-wide Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) environments. It detailed the components of the ACI Secure SOA Enabler and showed some examples of real customer deployments.

Richard Buckle, VP Strategy ACI Worldwide
Communications in a Multi-Tier Architecture
With NonStop participating in HP's multi - tier architecture, with the emphasis for NonStop on the database tier, the potential to rethink the communications support arises. Hybrid NonStop servers with HP-UX or Linux mid-tier application servers are now themselves the likely candidates for supporting todays networking infrastructures. Running the latest TCP/IP stack, together with CPU-intensive protocols, on the mid-teir server (with only a smaller subset of code in support of the APIs resident on the NonStop Server) may become the model for all future communications configurations. A number of options are now availble for the NonStop user that do not compromise availability and these will be covered in this presentation.

Scott Healy, Sabre Holdings
Business Solutions Using NonStop, Linux servers, and Open Source Software
The presentation covered roles that NonStop, Linux Servers, and Open Source Software can play in the datacenter. It described a number of generic business problems and how the components above can be architected to provide high quality, cost effective, and operable solutions.

Mike Zivkovic, HP NonStop Division Strategy and Planning
NonStop SQL Strategy and Direction
The HP NonStop server's evolution to an architecture fully embracing open standards is culminating with new HP Integrity NonStop servers based on standard Intel Itanium processors, range of Web Services and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) products, and wide adoption of the Open Source. This session covered application environments on NonStop servers to build modern real-time solutions, and how to architect cost effective multi-tier systems with existing and new technologies coming out in the future.

HP Strategy Presentation
Tom Moylan, VP NonStop Sales Americas
An introduction of NonStop's new direction in Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence. This was a high level preview on new products utilizing NonStop technology with Industry standard components. They were targeted at all industries that use Business Intelligence to give their company competitive advantage. This was a can't-miss preliminary overview of products that will be officially announced in September!

Database and Backup Tape Encryption on the NonStop Platform
Thomas Burg, CTO, comForte Inc.
This presentation looked at the complex topic of "encryption of data at rest" and started out by explaining the term and the driving forces making this a hot topic. comForte's offerings for backup tape encryption were presented. Finally Thomas spoke about how partnering with an industry leader in database encryption enables comForte to bring a robust and proven cross-platform solution to the NonStop user base.

Ask the Experts Session
This was a chance to communicate directly with industry leaders in the NonStop community. Questions were gathered in advance from the Summit attendees. In addition, 15 minutes were reserved for questions from the floor. Panel participants included Scott Healy (VP, Sabre Holdings and Vice Chair of ITUG), Sam Ayers (ITUG Java SIG and ITUG Advocacy Chair), Chris McAllister (GoldenGate), Ernie Guerrera (NuWave), Richard Buckle (VP Strategy, ACI, and former ITUG Chair), Thomas Burg (Comforte), Andrew Price (ACI), Dave Kelermanns (UC4), Scott Armburst (Tributary Systems), Pat Boland (HP) and James McFadden (Network Technologies).

Linking NonStop Data Real-Time into Business Intelligence Tools
James McFadden, Network Technologies
NTI introduced new products that make them the only company in the world that can link your NonStop data real-time into Oracle and SQL. Use Business Link ™ to access and analyze your data without having to move data off the NonStop. Warehouse Builder ™ lets you maintain your data warehouse on SQL/MX.

Java on Interity NonStop
Sam Ayers, Java SIG Leader
Java on Integrity NonStop presented architectural decision points, design considerations and practical implementation issues regarding Java development on the NonStop platform. Sam Ayers is moderator of the ITUG Java SIG, and a leader in the field of Java on the NonStop platform.

Secure Web Services for NonStop
Ernie Guerrera, NuWave
We looked at how easy it is to install and configure SOAP/AM on your NSK. Then, we showed you how to generate WSDL from DDL and look at a sample Pathway application accessed via Web services. Finally, we discussed both access and transaction security considerations and options available within the SOAP/AM product.

SunTUG, HP, and Chase Paymentech teamed up to provide a "SunTUG Technical Training Day" on Wed, May 3. This was a "basic" level course that covered Pathway, Guardian and OSS. The course was "Quick NS-series Servers Fundamentals" and was held at Chase Paymentech.

This 1-day course provided an introduction to HP NonStop NS-series servers and to the system software that makes them reliable, scalable, open, and fast. It described goals that have governed and are continuing to govern the evolution of these systems, and it reviewed NonStop server application, database, and operations environments.

We had over 30 people register and attend the class, another great success!

We had a great presentation by Sam Ayers, in addition to the class, and many thanks go to him as well. The slides from his presentation, "Using NonStop Java and JToolkit to Web-enable Enscribe Databases", can be downloaded by right-clicking here and choosing "save" from the pop-up window.

Sam's presentation was great, the OSS class was great (and FREE), the food was great and plentiful, and the location was was really nice.     What more could you ask for?

Our June 13th, 2003 Summit was a huge success!

Thankyou to those of you who filled out and sent in ITUG's event evaluation form. We will be working with ITUG to use the information you gave us to make our next event even better than this one.

For those who may have missed the event, HP's Derek Ginger has been kind enough to pass along the latest HP Roadmap.   Please click here to view it.   The file is 2 Meg, so if you'd rather download it to your PC for later viewing, right click on the previous link and choose "save target as..." (for Netscape users it would say "save link target as...").

HP has also been kind enough to provide a copy of the "Web Services on the NonStop platform" presentation - please click here to view it. The file is rather large (7.24 Meg), so if you have a dial-up connection, you will probably want to download the file rather than trying to view it online. To download it, right click on the previous link and choose "save target as..." (for Netscape users it would say "save link target as...").

The above files are in PDF format which requires the free Adobe Acrobat reader to view. If you do not have the Adobe® Reader®, you can download it from Adobe's site by clicking  here.

In addition to the representatives from each of our sponsors, we had 88 people in attendance:

1 from 5th 3rd Bank

This time around, ITUG and HP were doing a "Southeastern Regional NonStop Roadshow" which traveled from city to city June 9 – 13, 2003. We were their last stop, but definitely not least!   Each attendee received a goodie bag including a sponsorship recognition page, membership and event information, the Connection, and an ITUG 25th Anniversary t-shirt.

Each of the vendors in attendance also brought great information packets and lots of really cool goodies.

In addition, the Marriott Tampa Westshore provided plenty of excellent food and drink. Those folks who were unable to attend just don't know what they missed!

A big THANKYOU to HP and ITUG for doing such a great job with the registration and coordination efforts.
